Application for Reception class starting September 2023
All the staff in Nursery have been super impressed with how the children have settled in to their new groups and routines these past two weeks.
Lots of play and fun has been had already, especially in the dressing up area and on the sand table. It's wonderful to see the children becoming more confident accessing the resources around nursery independently and using them to play.
We hope your child has had lots to tell you about their day... but if your child simply says 'I don't know' or 'I can't remember', don't worry as lots of our exciting experiences will be put up here on our Nursery webpage so you don't miss out!!
Also, please remember that we are always happy for a chat if you would like to know more or have any concerns just come and see us.
If you need to contact nursery, please phone the school office or use the email addressnursery@theoaks.bham.sch.uk
Each day remember to bring a bottle of water with your name on
Wear a warm coat with a hood as we go outside to play every day
Bring your book back on Thursday and you can choose a new library book

Information about the Early Years Foundation Stage
All year long in nursery, all children have the opportunity to join in our weekly singing sessions, led by Mrs Mapp from Services for Education in the morning and nursery staff in the afternoon. These sessions are very popular. Some of the children were photographed by a professional photographer for Services for Education website. These photos show the wide range of things we do in a music and sounds session.
March 2022 in Nursery
Following return from half term in February, we had living egg chicks join us in nursery and we managed to hatch eight of the ten eggs, the children looked after them very well. Then we learnt lots of new things about the farm, where animals live, what their babies are called and where our food comes from. We rounded off the term with a trip to a real farm to see pigs, cows, hens and sheep - oh and a big red tractor.
February 2022
We continued with our theme of Traditional Tales, looked at the tale of The Enormous Turnip, grown seeds and printed with vegetables. We counted out buttons for our Gingerbread Man and he took us on an exciting chase around the nursery garden. We investigated why the Gingerbread Man did not want to get wet. We collected data about our favourite traditional tale - ask the children which one they enjoyed the most and to retell it to you in their own words.
January 2022
We have started the year listening to and enjoying Traditional Tales. This has involved hearing different versions of the stories, acting them out, building houses of wooden bricks, building bridges, making and eating porridge and using the language of measure and size. Then there has been the joy of learning new language, counting, looking at number and subitising. We have got creative with our hands, making Troll faces and painting pig faces. We are learning how to socialise each day and building friendships whilst learning how to be kind. We have welcomed new children to nursery this term. Enjoy looking at the photos of us learning.
November 2021
November in Nursery
We have been very busy learning through our play. Daily mark making is going on, we are using white board pens and boards, clip boards, pencils, felt tips and paint both independently and with the adults. We are using natural materials to make patterns with and getting immersed in our stories. We have really enjoyed The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child and Peace at Last and are learning how to retell the stories with our friends. We are using numbers when we count every day and love to watch the changes take place when we cook or make playdough together. We made Gruffalo models out of playdough and then made a village for them. We tasted a taste which was new to many of us when we made and ate Gruffalo Crumble. Sound Tots and PE are happening each week and we are building a good repertoire of songs to sing and showing determination in developing new physical skills. Most importantly, we are making friendships and learning how to share as we play together and also developing our sense of a community in our family groups with our key workers.
Autumn 2021
The children have settled back into nursery remarkably quickly, well done everyone. We are now in our routines and learning a great deal through our play. We go outside every day, when the music is playing outside, the children just love to dance! We build with all sorts of different materials, make collections of natural objects, use our senses to explore. We particularly enjoyed our recent listening walk where we distinguished between lots of different sounds. We hear stories every day and have opportunities to talk about our favourite stories. Singing is one of our favourite activities in nursery, we sing every day, counting rhymes are some of our favourite songs. Enjoy just a few of our recent photographs. Parents, look on your child's Tapestry account to see what they have been up to.
